"I
am fascinated by flowers. They
inspire me: they are mysterious as they bring forth visions, seasons and
initiate memories; they bring me back to the earth.
As
an architectural photographer, I record the stark and ornate beauty of buildings
inside and out. Cut flowers and plants are always key elements in the rooms that
I photograph. One of the most important components of a photograph of a building
exterior is the landscaping.
The
most exciting project I have and continue to photograph is a four and one-half
acre estate on the Navesink River, New Jersey.
I have witnessed and recorded its development and transformation for the
past seven years. Here, the flower
gardens are the story. They were
transformed from barren grass to lush gardens and from tangled brush and weeds
to a man-made pond to ice skate in the winter and enjoy giant water lilies in
the summer. Many decorative pots are always filled with lush overflowing flowers
and sometimes a lemon or orange tree.
The
flowers on this cube are a direct result of photographing this garden oasis. My
client and the designer, Norman Hungerford, Ph.D., asked me to compile a book to
commemorate the transformation of the gardens as a gift to the owners.
In collaboration with my friend and book artist, Elaine Golt Gongora, we
reviewed the hundreds of my photos of the garden in all seasons.
She suggested that real flowers would make this handmade book very
special. I collected every floral
variety I could and waited for them to dry.
The
dried flowers were too delicate to survive on the pages of a book so I started
photographing them and haven’t stopped. Now
the real blooms from my own ever-expanding flower and vegetable garden are the
subject of my photography.
I have been smitten with flowers and I hope you are too!" Melabee M Miller
